This will not be a quiet worship service
All children share two traits: movement and noise.
And let's be honest, adults have these traits in common too! So why would we not create an opportunity to raise our voices in praise to our Lord in ways that we can relate to? Why would we not create a worship space that incorporates movement? This worship service is about engaging the youth of all ages and inviting them to participate. Why another worship service during the summer?
Many of our families are use to attending Sunday School during this time. While this is NOT Sunday School, this is an excellent opportunity to keep both parents and children in the habit of attending church rather than taking a summer break. As far as programs go, this worship service is extremely flexible to engage all who attend whereas Sunday School requires a much heavier volunteer need and commitment from participants.
This is worship for the entire family though not just kids! This worship service is about engaging children of all ages and involving them as we gather to worship our Lord together as families. This worship is not about "dumbing down real worship" (whatever that means!). This worship service is about creating a space that is inviting for people of all ages as we take a moment out of our busy schedules to pause and invite our Lord into our midst. So, yeah, a 2nd Grader will probably be reading the lesson, kindergartener collect the offering, High Schooler serve communion, and a dad might even offer a prayer or two while a friend near by plays with the baby. This is worship as a family, as God's family. |
Why is movement important for worship?
Worship is a matter of heart. Simply put, movement opens up our hearts as it provides opportunity to be engaged.
Think about it, when was the last time you clapped your hands to a song, and by the end was not getting into it? When was the last time you danced around, head banged, and waved your arms but didn't get into it? Movement provides us a way to engage each other and God in worship. Movement also serves a neurological purpose. Movement requires more oxygen with enables the brain to pay closer attention. Movement requires energy using more glucose which causes the brain to retain more. Neurological science has demonstrated that moving while trying to learn something causes the students to have better attention and retention. So why not utilize this in our worship space? Why not engage how God has made us? This worship is our response to...parents who are anxious about their child sitting still
